Hi Reader! You didn't hear from me last Friday. Family needed me, and family won — everyone's fine, but it took the whole week and the newsletter didn't make the cut. Thank you for being the kind of list where I can just say that. 📺 So here's my confessionI have a vice, and it is television. Not the drama, let's-discuss-the-cinematography kind of television habit. The real kind. The "one more episode" kind. The kind you don't lead with when someone asks how you unwind. Last night I started the new A Different World, and I was not prepared for what it would do to me. Those characters are my age now. Kids. Careers. Whole lives built. I grew up with them and now we're grown together, and apparently nobody warned my heart about that. I sat there and smiled for three solid hours. Not chuckled. Smiled — the whole time, like a fool in my own house. I didn't even know I was miling until my husband asked me why I was "smiling like that?" I must admit, I felt a little silly about it. Which is the part I actually want to talk about. 🙂 Why did that feel like something to apologize for?I run a business. I help people build systems. I have spent years telling clients that the whole point of good structure is to buy back your time. And then I got three hours of pure, uncomplicated joy and my first instinct was mild embarrassment. We do this. We treat rest like something we have to earn — like joy is the reward at the end of the task list, and the task list is never actually done, so the joy keeps getting postponed to a Friday that doesn't arrive. Your business does not need you to be miserable to take you seriously. ⏱️ Your 10-minute assignment (the fun one)This one's easy and slightly ridiculous. Do it anyway.
That's it. You just scheduled joy with the same seriousness you'd schedule a discovery call, and you told your phone to leave you alone while it happens. You would not double-book a client. Stop double-booking yourself. 💜 Real TalkThere's no offer in this email. No link, no button, nothing to click. That's deliberate. The reason I care about systems in the first place isn't productivity for its own sake. It's that a business running on duct tape takes everything you've got, and there's nothing left over for three hours of laughing at your own television on a Thursday night. That's what the structure is for. Not so you can work more. So that when you close the laptop, it actually stays closed. 😂 Joke of the WeekMy calendar now has a recurring appointment titled "important." It's television. It has always been television. 📺 📖 Quote of the Week"Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation." — Audre Lorde 💭 Thought for the WeekRest isn't the prize for finishing. Nobody finishes. Now tell me yours. Hit reply with your comfort watch — the one you put on when the week has been a week. No judgment available here; I just confessed to grinning at a screen for three hours. I'll share the list next Friday. I fully expect to add several things to my own queue. Hi Reader! I am so proud of myself! I have a new interest that doesn't involve being at a computer!!! Can you believe it? I was getting a bit worn out/worn down with business. I felt like I was always working. I honestly don't remember a recent time that I have taken a vacation without a laptop. It was starting to weigh on me. I've been suffering with chronic back pain for a while and a friend suggested trying Pilates. I have had a gym membership for years and it is offered at my gym. I just...
Hi Reader! I said I'd share the comfort-watch list, so I'll go first and you can judge me accordingly. The original A Different World. Living Single. And — don't look at me like that — Law & Order: SVU, but only the Liv and Elliot years. I will also admit to a days-long CSI: Miami and Criminal Minds situation more than once. I don't want to talk about what that says about me. New season of Lupin begins October 23rd, and I have already mentally cleared that weekend. 💰 Now the part I've been...
